Basic Software microsoft server 2008 without highper-v and vnc for remote desktop. why sit in front of a monitor away from the family when you can do it from a laptop in the same room as the family.

While Planning how i was going to have the plastic cuts, i setup the system on my side. to install system and start the basics

  • atom 330 with 2gb ram
  • 1TB green drive
  • 700 watts power
  • a temp dvd-rom to install system

After getting the basics going i had to think about how i was going to use 21 harddrives on this system 1 drive being the system.

what i now need next

    • sata controller card
    • port forwarder controllers
    • custom active leds for each harddrive
    • all in one sata and power connectors

4 Port SATA II Card, Low Profile Option, RAID Function, PCI

this card is the key to the 20 drives im going to be installing

This card can do the following

    • Bus Type: 32 Bit PCI
    • Internal Connector: 4 x SATA Female
    • Supports RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 5 and JBOD
    • Port Multiplier and NCQ (Native Command Queuing) support
    • Standard and Low Profile back plates included
    • Software Compatibility: Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista and Linux

this card cost me £85 but this card allows port forwarding, what this means in stead of having 4 drives installed on this card, you can have as much as 20 drives by using the controller adaptors

5 Port SATA II Multiplier Bridge Board, RAID Function

this is whats used to turn one port on the card to 5. another good thing is there is status leds ports for ever drive and controller

the multiplier controller can do the following

  • Chipset Silicon Image Sil3726
  • Internal Connectors: 5 x SATA Female
  • External Connector: 1 x eSATA Female
  • Metal back plate attaches to standard external enclosure back panel
  • Supplied with additional Slot Plate for installation into a suitable enclosure
  • Port Multiplier and NCQ (Native Command Queuing) support
  • Pin header for drive activity LEDs
  • RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, Cocantenated and JBOD Groups supported

both card can be configured to raid 2 drives.. i Paid £55 each on these Multipliers so shop around.

Raid Card Installed and running. this 4 port raid card will turn into the 20 port needed

1 port multiplier installed and working with custom led status to ensure everything is working correct
